Sony, Canon, and Nikon are often considered the top brands for mirrorless cameras, but Fujifilm and Olympus also have some great camera bodies worth exploring.Things may still be far from “normal,” but our desire for adventure remains the same. Others feature full-frame sensors for maximum resolution. Some models are very compact with crop-size sensors for easy portability and a lower price tag. Your camera’s manual will help explain any available special features and settings so you can get the best results. Using a mirrorless camera is the same as using any other interchangeable-lens camera. Pay attention to weight and dimension specifications as you shop. Some models are designed with a body closer to a DSLR in size as a way to provide a more comfortable grip. When exploring cameras, don’t just assume that all mirrorless cameras are small. Mirrorless cameras don’t need to accommodate the physical swing of an internal mirror, so they’re often more physically streamlined. DSLRs are typically larger and heavier than mirrorless models, especially full-frame DSLRs. Many photographers mention differences in the size and weight of mirrorless cameras as one of the main reasons they made the switch. Size and Weight Differences Between Mirrorless and DSLR Many photographers prefer this style of preview because the camera adapts the previewed image to show how the aperture settings will affect the depth of field.ĭSLRs show you the composition before the image is taken, so they don’t deliver a complete idea of how your settings will affect the resulting image. Instead, mirrorless cameras display a digital preview of their composition using an electronic viewfinder or the live viewscreen on the back of the camera. The one significant difference is that while DSLRs feature internal mirrors for showing the view through the lens to the photographer, mirrorless cameras don’t. Mirrorless Camera vs DSLR: What’s the Difference?ĭSLR and mirrorless cameras have many similarities in terms of processing, sensor styles, and the interchangeability of lenses. ![]() Many top brands are getting in on the mirrorless movement, so you can easily find a professional-quality mirrorless digital camera to suit your photographic or video needs. It's a substantial downgrade over last year's Advanced Warfare, where Sledgehammer stayed locked at a 1360x1080 resolution during the more demanding scenes. Due to the heavy upscale, the Xbox One release possesses a consistent blurry appearance when the action really kicks in: fine details are frequently smudged over, while geometry edges appear rough and fuzzy. Instead we're looking at a sustained 1280x900 resolution, even in less stressful gameplay scenes, with horizontal metrics dropping down to 1200x900 in more challenging scenarios - and the results are not impressive. Xbox One is a different story, targeting a baseline 1600x900 for gameplay, but after trawling through our captures it appears that the engine rarely - if ever - achieves this. During the opening firefight in the Provocation mission we see PS4 kick off at 1360x1080p before ramping back up to full 1080p a few moments later - the switch is often barely visible due to softening effect of the AA solution, although some blur across distant details is apparent. PS4 ranges between 1360x1080 to 1920x1080, although much of the time the engine manages to hit the desired native 1080p resolution for extended periods. Once the player gains control we see shifts in native resolution across both platforms, according to engine load. PS4 doesn't appear to drop below 1080p at all in these scenes, whereas the Xbox One version seems to transition down to 1728x1080 just before gameplay kicks off - and that's where the scaler really gets to work. Anti-aliasing is handled via the use of filmic SMAA, successfully providing good coverage across geometry edges, though some texture blurring is apparent. So how does the dynamic scaler work in Black Ops 3? Both Xbox One and PS4 versions render in native 1080p during cut-scenes, and for the most part full HD quality is retained throughout the duration of these sequences. This involves adjusting pixel-count on the fly, depending on the engine load - it's a way of freeing up valuable GPU time without permanently compromising on image quality, and produced some remarkably smooth results in the recently released Halo 5. On top of the optimisation effort, it seems that the team's solution to the performance challenge was to implement yet another ambitious piece of technology: dynamic resolution scaling. The team's technological ambitions are also remarkable in terms of the game's visuals: physically-based rendering, simulated global illumination and a battery of impressive post effects work makes this new campaign the most visually arresting yet.īut has the developer perhaps pushed its technology too far? The campaign co-op demo revealed at this year's E3 had us slightly concerned: frame-rates throughout the demo often fell short of the desired 60fps target, even dipping below 30fps. Blacks Ops 3 delivers yet another bombastic Call of Duty campaign, this time backed by four-player online co-op, along with a two-player local split-screen mode. You've got to hand it to Treyarch - the team's Call of Duty titles always push boundaries in terms of scale, scope and spectacle. ![]() ![]() ![]() For free software it has a lot of remarkable features. It is not as fast to focus as is the Sigma or my other m4/3 lenses, but its not slow, either. I'll give it an honest shot in real-world use before complaining too much more. The sigma 30mm f1.4 you mentioned is a v nice lens. Yeah, I think my expectations were just a bit too high after the rave reviews. Perhaps some of the reviews set our expectations too high with grandiose statements like "perfectly sharp across the image when wide open". It was far from perfect in the sharpness uniformity department when wide open. I got the Sigma 16 and had it for a while, then returned it due to the f2 focusing bug. Loss of contrast is more pronounced than loss of resolution as you open up. Huh, I've had no issues with the EVF so far (it's similar in sharpness to the a7 ii's, and faster too with 120Hz refresh). No one like seeing their face full of crows feets, and acne pot scars./ Maybe you have slightly mis-focused?Īlso sharpness isn't everything when it comes to portraits lens. Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS (which I used to own) is much softer at 1.8 than Sigma at 1.4.Īs much as I am impressed by A6400 AF speed and rapid response, I'm let down by the Tiny Dim Dark EVF that feel like peeping through a keyhole. You should expect a bit less contrast at 1.4. ![]() Take into account limited depth of focus at 1.4 and some field curvature. It looks very sharp to me in the center, where the focus point is, just like my copy. If I have to use this at or below f/2-ish anyway, should I instead consider switching to the stabilized Sony E 35mm f/1.8 instead? Or will that be similarly not-sharp wide open? Here is a sharpness comparison starting from f/5.6 going to f/2.8 to f/1.4: I recently switched from the a7 II to the a6400 (for size/weight, and autofocus reasons), and I knew I would possibly have to make compromises in image quality - especially considering the excellent Sony/Zeiss 55/1.8.Īfter reading the rave reviews of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens I decided to get one, but I'm not fully satisfied with the wide-open performance, or maybe I'm just being too picky and comparing it to a legend. Nothing in the world is really perfectly parallel to the sensor ever, so out in the world you will have to decide which mini-slice you want in focus at f/1.4. Get out and photograph, even dare to use f/1.4 when there is a need. Do you have an optical bench with micro adjustments? If not, all your tripod work will fail you miserably and give you a false prejudice and dislike of this lens needlessly, I am afraid. I can see the misalignment very clearly at all apertures in your pics. You need to have microscopically and accurately aligned and absolute parallel planes that you depict and what the sensor depicts. If you had checked this out, you would realize that your skewed alignment throughout this new trial is responsible to your seemingly lack of focus results. Have you taken the time to find the actual DOF at f/1.4 for your lens and distance? What is the actual DOF here, in millimeters, please, and do let us know. ![]() |
